What is an EVOH Barrier?

Ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) barriers comprise a family of extrudable plastic barrier materials with excellent barrier properties for oxygen and a variety of other gases and volatile products (flavor barrier). Gantrade is proud to market the Evasin™ family of EVOH extrudable plastic barrier materials from Taiwan’s Chang Chun Petrochemicals.

What is EVOH used for? 

Based on its excellent gas barrier properties, manufacturers may coextrude with or laminate EVOH to polyolefin resins for food packaging and industrial applications. EVOH barrier grades are also great for applications in food packaging and agricultural film sectors among others. EVOH copolymer also has excellent chemical and oil resistance that enables it to be used as the fuel barrier layer in low emission fuel tanks for automobiles and portable gas containers.

Packaging for EVOH comes in two options from Gantrade:

How do manufacturers apply EVOH barriers?

 
Manufacturers typically apply EVOH barriers with different kinds of ethylene content in various barrier products by the fabrication process methods of blown or cast co-extrusion, co-extrusion lamination, or co-extrusion coating to form bottles, sheet for thermoforming, films, cast films, pipes, tubes or fibers. Manufacturers can process polymers and resins, and packaging performance can be optimized by selecting the appropriate grade of EVASIN® resins.
 
 
How is EVOH processed with resins?

 

The following EVOH resin processing methods have been broadly adopted by extrusion companies:
  • Monolayer film extrusion (blown or cast)
  • Co-extruded film extrusion (blown or cast)
  • Sheet co-extrusion
  • Co-extrusion blow molding
  • Co-extrusion coating
  • Laminating
